About 10 years ago, someone tipped me to a great music documentary about the roots music movement in Istanbul called “Crossing the Bridge.” I found the DVD and screened it one summer night with my family. The film is a fantastic musical journey, and the standout scene was recorded in an 18th Century Turkish bath, featuring a young woman singing a Kurdish dirge, with the incredible reverb of the room. It was riveting. We all held our breaths as this magical voice emanated from the screen, all of us exhaling only when the scene was over. That was Aynur Doğan.
I and many of my colleagues in the Midwest world music festival consortium have been trying to bring her to our festivals ever since. It is finally happening this year, and I strongly suggest you not miss this rare opportunity to hear this incredible Kurdish singer.
